UGC NET: Characteristics of Research


1. Controlled: It means in exploring causality in relation to two variables, you set up your study in a way that minimizes the effect of other variables affecting the relationship.

note: causality means cause + effect



2. Rigorous;

 The procedure followed to find answers to questions are relevant, appropriate and justified.



3. Systematic:

The procedures in an investigation should follow a certain logical sequence. the different steps can not be taken in a haphazard way. Some procedure must follow others.


4. Valid:

Whatever you conclude on the basis of your findings should be correct and can be verified by you and others.



5. Verifiable



6. Reliable:

Whatever you co  Research method should produce stable and consistent results. (RC-Reliable Consistency)

A measure is considered to be reliable if same result comes when a number of times it is processed.

Validity vs Reliability

valid is always reliable but vice versa is not true.

Valid means accurate. (VA)

Reliable means consistent (RC)

Validity is more important than reliablility.



6. Empirical:--> Experience



Any conclusion drawn are based on hard evidence gathered from information collected from real life experiences or observations.




7. Critical



The process of investigation must be fool proof and free from any drawbacks.



8. Credibility or veracity




 Researchers should tell the truth and pass on information in a comprehensive and objective way.



9. Cyclic process



 Should start with a problem and end with a problem.
